On 26 March 1979, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat transformed the Middle East forever by signing a peace agreement, Israel’s first with an Arab state. Though never more than a cold peace, it has withstood multiple tests of durability, including Israel’s wars in Lebanon, the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians, and a short-lived Muslim Brotherhood Presidency in Egypt.
